Write Again…When you wish upon a star

“It’s a world of laughter, a world of tears; a world of hopes, and a world of fears. There’s so much that we share, that it’s time we’re aware, it’s a small world after all.”

In 1973 the 50th anniversary of the very beginning of Walt Disney’s career in the public domain was noted, observed and commemorated in various ways.

Who could possibly have foreseen the incalculable impact his genius – and that of the many, many truly talented people he gathered around him – would have, not only in America, but in the world? Who, indeed?

“It’s a small world, after all. It’s a small world after all. It’s a small world after all. It’s a small, small world.”

I was so very fortunate to be involved in a Disney tribute in 1973. It was one of the most inspiring and enjoyable endeavors I’ve ever experienced.

We were living in Raleigh, and I was a member of the Sir Walter Chorus, a 60-member barbershop group, and for our annual show (a two-night, one matinee performances) we did a Walt Disney show at the Memorial Auditorium in downtown Raleigh.

For the three performances the attendance was in excess of two thousand. It was a very big performance venue.

“There is just one moon and one golden sun, a smile means friendship to everyone. Though the mountains divide, and the oceans are wide, it’s a small world after all.”

All the music was from Disney movies. At one point during the show the many side doors that provided access to the auditorium seating area would open, and the Disney characters would enter! Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Pluto, et al.

We had been given permission by the Disney people to put on the show, using only their music, and having the famous “characters” appear. There exists a wealth of Disney music, much of it truly iconic, and easily recognizable. Good stuff!

“It’s a small world after all. It’s a small world after all. It’s a small world after all. It’s a small, small world.”

And indeed it is.

Just think about it the next time “when you wish upon a star.”
